Why Jewellery Leaves a Green Mark, and How to Stop It
It is the most common complaint about fashion jewellery anywhere, and it is widely misunderstood. The green mark is not dirt, it is not the jewellery being dirty, and it is not usually an allergic reaction. It is a chemical one, and knowing which changes what you do about it.
What is actually happening
Plated jewellery is a layer of gold over a base metal. While that layer is intact, the base metal never touches your skin. Where the layer has worn thin or broken, the base is exposed - and base metals react with moisture, sweat and the acids on skin. That reaction produces a compound that transfers to the skin as a green or grey mark.
Two things follow from that, and they are the useful part:
It starts at contact points, not randomly. The inside of a ring, the back of a pendant, the post of an earring. Those are where friction thins the plating first.
It is a sign the plating has gone, not a sign the piece was bad. Every plated piece reaches this eventually. What you control is how long that takes.
What makes it happen faster
In rough order of how much they matter:
- Water. Bathing, swimming, washing hands with jewellery on. Chlorine is the worst of them.
- Sweat. Which is why it shows up in summer, at long functions, and on the pieces worn while dancing.
- Perfume, hairspray, deodorant, lotion. All are acidic or solvent, and all attack plating directly.
- Friction. Two pieces stored loose together scratch each other, and a scratch is a hole in the barrier.
- Damp storage. A closed drawer through an Indian monsoon does damage with nobody wearing anything.
What actually prevents it
Jewellery goes on last and comes off first. After perfume, after hairspray, after makeup. Before washing, before bed, before exercise. This one habit does more than everything else here.
Wipe it dry after wearing, with a soft cloth, while it is still warm. You are removing sweat before it sits.
Store each piece separately, in its own pouch, away from damp. Silica gel sachets in the box, replaced at the start of every monsoon.
Never clean plated jewellery with water, toothpaste, lemon or silver polish. All four remove plating. A dry soft cloth is the whole toolkit.

If a mark has already appeared
On your skin, it washes off with soap and water and is harmless.
On the piece, look at where it happened. If the plating has worn through at one contact point, that spot will keep reacting. You can keep wearing the piece for occasions and accept that spot, but it will not reverse. Plating cannot be restored at home, and any attempt to polish it back takes off more of what is left.

What we will say is what they are made of - Zamak, a zinc alloy, with a gold-plated finish and hand-set stones - and that the plating is the barrier. How long the barrier lasts is mostly decided by the habits above.
