What Jewellery to Wear for Diwali
Diwali is the one festival where the lighting does the choosing for you. Almost everything happens after dark, under diyas, fairy lights and warm indoor bulbs - and warm, low, uneven light flatters some jewellery and flattens the rest.
The lighting rule
Under diyas and warm bulbs, stones outperform metal. Cast gold work that looks magnificent in daylight goes quiet under a lamp, because there is not enough light to throw the shadow that makes the relief read. Kundan and kemp, which bounce back whatever small light reaches them, come alive.
So Diwali is the occasion to wear the sparkier half of your collection - the opposite of the advice for a daytime wedding.
Lakshmi puja
This is the formal part of the evening and the one photographed most. Traditional wins here: a temple collar with a Lakshmi at the centre is the motif of the festival itself, which is not a coincidence worth ignoring.
- A short temple collar, not a long haram - you will be seated, bending forward to the thali, and a haram swings into everything.
- Jhumkas, mid-size. Anything larger catches on a dupatta pulled over the head.
- Keep the wrists clear of anything that will knock against a puja plate.
The party afterwards
Different rules. This is the sparkle half of the evening and the one where a statement piece earns its place.
- A long haram over a plain kurta or saree does more work than a busy outfit with a small necklace.
- Chandbali earrings, which throw light back at every camera in the room.
- If the outfit is already heavily worked, drop the necklace entirely and let the earrings carry it.
Taash, dinner, the days in between
Diwali is a week, not a night, and the middle days are where people over-dress or give up entirely. A single pendant on a bead chain is the piece for this: it reads as considered without looking like you dressed for a wedding to play cards.

Wear it, then put it away properly
