Sangeet Jewellery: Dressed Up, and Able to Dance
Sangeet is the function people most often dress wrongly, because they dress for the photographs at the start and then spend four hours dancing in it. The jewellery that works here is chosen for movement first and appearance second - and the good news is that the two are less in conflict than people assume.
Movement is the whole constraint
Everything you wear will be in motion:
- Earrings must be secure, not just pretty. Use the push-backs that came with the pair, and add a clear plastic disc behind the lobe if they are heavy. An earring lost mid-garba is not usually found.
- Necklaces must not swing. A long haram on a dance floor hits you in the face. This is the one bridal-scale piece to leave out.
- Nothing on the wrists that catches, on a dupatta, on a partner's hand, on a dandiya stick.
What to wear instead of the haram
The answer is a choker or a collar - short, close to the neck, and immobile. It reads as fully dressed in photographs and does not move when you do.
If you want the look of length, put it in the earrings. Long jhumkas swing but they swing away from you, which is the difference.
Lighting that will not stay still
Sangeet lighting changes constantly - warm, then coloured, then strobing, then a phone flash. There is no single finish that wins under all of it, which argues for stones over cast metal: kundan and kemp read as sparkle under anything, while cast relief needs a stable light source to show depth.
This is one of the few occasions where a brighter polished finish is the safer choice than matte.
Building it to last four hours
- Put the earrings on last, as close to leaving as possible.
- Check the backs before you start dancing, not after.
- If you are in a dandiya function specifically, go smaller in the ears than you otherwise would. Arms are moving at head height all evening.
- Carry nothing you would mind losing. Sangeet has the highest loss rate of any function in an Indian wedding.
For the bride, and for everyone else
If it is your sangeet, this is the occasion to be visibly dressed while being the person dancing most - a choker, secure statement earrings, and nothing else competing. If you are a guest, the same logic applies with more freedom on colour.
Either way: do not wear the wedding set. It has a job two days later, and a set that has already been seen at the sangeet is a set that is not new on the day.
